DBU Mozilla Maker’s Party 2014

This is Bipin Karki (FSA from Punjab) below is blog about Maker’s Party being organized in Desh BhagatUniversity, Punjab on 4th Nov 2014.


The maker’s party is event where we discuss about Mozilla Web Maker’s Tool i.e X-ray goggles, Thimble, Popcorn Maker and App Maker. This was much awaited and maiden maker’s party ever organized in Punjab. With guidance of various Reps and their suggestion slowly Mozilla Punjab is rising in participation, performance and advertisement. The event was preplanned by Mozilla Punjab Volunteers with co-operation from Mozilla India Reps. I am glad to be part of this event as coordinator. Preface

The event begun at 11:00 am with welcome notes from Santosh. He took charge and explained about Mozilla as non-profit organization. The educational efforts from Mozilla Webmaker to make internet easy, creative, effective and reach to common people. Initially participants were told about open source, Mozilla history & foundation, structure of operation and contribution of Volunteer for making Mozilla stand as proud open source organization. There was wild cheer from audiences as event proceeded further.


The mid-session began with Abhishek, Deepak and I talking about our experience as Firefox student Ambassdor, what we wish to do, how has been our journey so far. And providing info about some Webmaker tools.

The next session started with giving live demo working of thimble, popcorn maker, appmaker, x-ray goggles to new comer to Mozilla Punjab by Sajeev & Chandan. The duo focused on App Maker as it is latest innovation of Mozilla to provide a free, open source app making tool which enables user to drag and drop various component to build share customize mobile apps in your own browser. The room was lighted up with interaction of presenter and participants. The midways fun, creative activity and information made event more lively and effective.

Attendee Responses

Participants were happy to share their gained knowledge with competition being organized. The theme of competition was to get attendees response. We had already decided that attendees will be awarded with cool swags and winners with T-shits. The competition was to make something cool using any of webmakers tool. The mostly used tool were popcorn maker, thimble and appmaker. They made new videos, websites, demo apps and other interesting things on web.
  
Outcomes

We got good responses from attendees and their eagerness to be part of Mozilla volunteer League. The event was able to gather 100 participants. The teacher were glad to be part of event. While summing up the event was real successful by active participation of attendee, good presentation and good coordination.

The power of salt



Power generation from the meeting of river water and seawater.

Where the river meets the sea, there is the potential to harness a significant amount of renewable energy. The evaluation of an emerging method of power generation called pressure retarded osmosis (PRO), in which two streams of different salinity are mixed to produce energy. In principle, a PRO system would take in river water and seawater on either side of a semi-permeable membrane. Through osmosis, water from the less-salty stream would cross the membrane to a pre-pressurized saltier side, creating a flow that can be sent through a turbine to recover power.
 


The model on a simplified PRO system in which a large semi-permeable membrane divides a long rectangular tank. One side of the tank takes in pressurized salty seawater, while the other side takes in river water or waste water. Through osmosis, the membrane lets through water, but not salt. As a result, freshwater is drawn through the membrane to balance the saltier side. As the freshwater enters the saltier side, it becomes pressurized while increasing the flow rate of the stream on the salty side of the membrane. This pressurized mixture exits the tank, and a turbine recovers energy from this flow.
